Coldwater Trail – Maricopa County Parks, Goodyear, Arizona is a trail located 24 miles from Phoenix, Az. in the estrella mountain regional park. Entry fee is ($6.00) six dollars per vehicle to enter the park. You will need to pass through the middle of the park that has a nature center, playgrounds, ramadas, primitive camping and rv camping. After passing the entry gate you will see the nature center on the right. The main road splits and both roads will meet up again on the other side of the grass park. Just keep going and both roads will lead you south to the rodeo arena which is about (1) one mile south of the grass park. As you get to the end of the road it will split again. Stay left to arrive at the coldwater trailhead which is also on the left of the big gravel parking area (South East Corner). The other road takes you to the the arena parking.
The best time of year for this trail is winter since it can become too hot to hike in the heat of the summer. The trail is a great one for kids and beginning hikers because the start of the trail is an easy gravel service road that is wide and not very difficult. It is an out and back hike that can be adjusted to how far you want to go. The first mile of the hike is wide enough for 2 cars. The trail then comes to an opening that looks like it was the old parking lot. At this point, you will want to keep left again and head south. You will see the trail pick back up and get smaller. About the size of an off road 4 wheeler size. It becomes a bit more rocky and continues a slight elevation gain. I would say no more than 250 feet gain across the 3.5 mile trail.
Hikers can expect only seeing a few other hikers on this trail. On a scale of hiker popularity of 1 to10, with 10 being a very crowded and popular hike, I would give this trail a (3). Early mornings would give you the highest probability of seeing any wildlife. Cellular phone coverage is an (8) out of 10. My phone seemed fine except towards the last half mile of the trail. Your results may be different depending on your cell phone provider. Area Code (623).
The trail ends at a point where it “T’s” and hits another trail. Simply turn and hike back the same way you came.
Special gear: Although this is an easy beginner trail and you are able to see parts of Phoenix and Goodyear on parts of the trail, you never know when or how a medical emergency or other event could change your whole day. So, start practicing now on this trail and carry items that would assist you in case disaster strikes. Every lost hiker says the same thing… “We were only going out for a day hike!” Have Fun but plan Smart!
